On his 80th birthday, Ferry Porsche is presented with a ready-to-drive design study of a roadster based on the 911 Carrera 4. The model combines characteristic 911 features with distinctive individuality. A striking feature is the horizontal roof structure and a top that can be opened by using a zipper. Another special detail is the Porsche crest inserted in the tyres’ pattern. Completed in just a few months and given the euphonic name “Panamericana”, this model is also displayed at the 1989 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. The design of the horizontal roof structure strongly influences the subsequent development of the 911 Targa and the study also provides the inspiration for designing a roadster, the future Porsche Boxster.
