With the 959, Porsche redefines the concept of the “super sports car”. Its 2.8-litre twin-turbo engine is a close relative of the powerplant that makes the 962 C a serial winner on the race track. Thanks to staged twin-turbocharging, thrust sets in at very low revs. An electronically controlled four-wheel-drive system with ABS, four pre-programmable shock absorber settings, and speed-dependent ride control make the 959 a technological trendsetter. For the chassis and body Porsche applies innovative materials and manufacturing technologies. The “Sport” version, of which only 29 are built, undercuts the weight of the “Komfort” version by 100 kilograms. Thanks to modified turbochargers, increased boost pressure and adjusted ignition and fuel injection, the engine delivers an additional 65 hp. In a test conducted by the specialist magazine “auto, motor & sport”, the 959 S achieves a top speed of 339 km/h. Between 1986 and 1988, Porsche delivers a total of 292 units of the 959 “Komfort” and “Sport” to customers.
